Hi, in October my regular California drivers license expired and I got a temporary drivers license. They said the real license would come per mail but it never did. Today I was at the DMV again because the temporary license expired. The lady behind the counter couldn;t tell me why the real license wasn't sent out but she gave me an interim drivers license now.
Does anyone know what the difference between temporary and interim is? The piece of paper looks exactly the same (except for the words temporary and interim).
The Department of Motor Vehicles has made the California drivers license renewal procedure both quick and easy. A California driver can renew their license online if they are eligible to renew by mail, and can meet certain other criteria. This is a very convenient way to do business with the department.
Eligibility First, you have to be eligible for renewal by mail. This means the following:. Your driver's license isn't due to expire for 60 days from the date you renew by mail. You are less than 70 years old by the time your license expires. You are not on any type of driving suspension or probation.
You haven't violated any promises to a court within the last two years. You haven't yet received two consecutive five year extensions via mail. You don't have a license in more than one state or jurisdiction.
Once you qualify for renewal by mail, you have these additional requirements to be eligible for renewal through Internet:. You have received a renewal notice that has a special RIN (Renewal Identification Number) on it. You do not need to accomplish a change of address or a change of personal description application. You have a verified SSN (Social Security Number) on your DMV record. You have a valid credit card.
Fees For California drivers, the license renewal fee for both renewal by Internet and via mail is the same, shown on the license renewal mail you received. You can pay using a debit or credit card for online renewal. If you're using a debit card, you won't be asked for your PIN. The DMV also has sufficient firewalls in place to ensure information about your finances will be kept private. Nonetheless, see the California DMV website's privacy policy to know exactly which information is being collected and stored. Ineligibility There are certain situations that cause you to be ineligible for license renewal online. These cases are mostly when the situation may impair your capability to safely drive your vehicle.
With these cases, you need to renew your license in person at the DMV. For example, if you just recently had eye surgery, you probably won't meet the screening standard and will have to renew in person. Being recently disabled also requires renewing in person, and you may be asked to take a behind-the-wheel driving test to prove you can still drive despite the disability. If the condition will not affect your capability of safely operating a motor vehicle, you don't have to report it, for instance if you are pregnant. If the condition will affect your capability of driving safely but is only temporary (like a broken leg), you will still be eligible and don't have to report it, but you are prohibited from driving until the leg is healed. How to Get a California Drivers License To get a California drivers license you need to go through a few steps. Before going to the DMV office, take note of the following needed for the drivers license test:.
A completed original copy of application form DL 44. Your Social Security number. Payment for the application fee First-Time Drivers Those who are applying for a driver's license for the first time in California need to apply for a learner's permit.
Applicants must pass a written test on traffic signs, motor vehicle laws and safe driving practices. Applicants who are below the age of 18 must have a learner's permit for six months and be able to show a certificate of completion for the mandatory 50 hours of supervised driving prior to taking the road skills exam. Identification Process The first part of the application process (after filling out the driver's license application) is to establish your identification with the California DMV. You need to give them a thumb print.
Next you'll have your picture taken. You need to provide them with your social security number and they will verify that number with the Social Security Administration while you are there. You also need to provide identification that establishes your birth date and your legal right to be in the United States.
California also requires that you provide them with your full and correct name. Fee At the time of application you need to pay the license fee. That fee is $31 (for a standard driver's license) as of the start of 2010. It is subject to change, though. Vision Testing The first California drivers license test necessary for licensing a motorist is the vision exam.
They test each eye individually and both together. You can use corrective lenses when you take this vision exam. If you don't pass this test you need to see a vision specialist who can provide glasses or other types of lenses to help you to pass it the next time you try. Traffic Laws and Sign Test All potential California drivers are required to pass a traffic laws and sign test. It is a 36 question test and you can retake the test twice if you don't pass the first time.
![Application Requirements Application Requirements](/uploads/1/2/3/7/123787152/810913316.png)
This test is designed to be sure you have an understanding of the rules of the road in the state of California. Driving Test First you'll be given a permit and required to make a driving test appointment. No driving tests are provided without appointment.
You also need to show proof of insurance or financial responsibility to take your driving test. As with the traffic laws and sign test, if you don't pass you can retake the test twice, but you'll need to make another appointment to do so.
New Residents For new California residents who have a license from a different state, a California license should be acquired within 10 days of becoming a permanent California resident. The license from the former state should be brought and surrendered to the DMV. Applicants must pass the written and vision exams, but the road skills exam won't be necessary. If the out-of-state license is expired, it is necessary to apply for a California interim license and do well on all required exams to obtain the license. Once you pass your driving test (or traffic laws and signs test for those not required to take a driving test) you will be issued an interim drivers license. This license is only good for 60 days. Your photo driver's license will come to you via the US mail.
